About the Podcast

Hi everyone, I’m Hillary Kerr, and this is Second Life, a podcast that spotlights the career changes that can come at any age.

To give you a little background about me, I’m living proof of the Second Life phenomenon. I started my career as an editor at Elle magazine in New York before moving to Los Angeles, where I worked as a freelance writer. From there, I met my business partner, Katherine Power, and we co-founded our first digital media brand, Who What Wear, in 2006. Our business has grown quite a lot since then and is now a global media and consumer brands company, complete with a clothing line, Who What Wear collection, sold exclusively at Target. Katherine and I have also co-authored three books, and the company has won countless awards, including Digiday’s Most Innovative Publisher in 2018, and even made Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list in 2017.

So what did I know about starting a business? Absolutely nothing. I didn’t have any savings, nor did I have any experience in digital media, and I barely understood the concept of a business plan. Even trickier: At that point in time, the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries had no interest in digital in the slightest. It was a challenging time, to put it mildly, and that pivot was completely terrifying in so many ways. It also has been the most rewarding choice of my life, in a million different ways.

Over 12 years of entrepreneurship later, Second Life is taking me back to my first life as a journalist as we explore the stories of inspiring women who’ve fearlessly mastered career pivots of their own. You'll hear from pioneers, artists, mothers, founders, writers, visionaries, designers, CEOs, and more about how they found their version of success and fulfillment. We’re peeling back the layers to their successes and sharing their winding roads of missteps, lessons, trying moments, and even outright failures that we can all learn from. Hopefully, hearing these women's stories makes your Monday commute a little more enjoyable and inspires you in your first, second, or third life—and beyond. Or maybe we’ll just entertain you. Either way, we’re glad you’re here.
